A reserve where close encounters with African Elephants are possible – ethically and professionally.

Who has never dreamed of trying the magnificent, unique, incredible emotion of a close encounter with elephants? Who wouldn’t want to touch its trunk or its giant African-shaped ears? Is there any animal lover able to remain indifferent to the magnificence, powerful but delicate force that the elephant transmits with its slow movements or with its deep looks? The question they ask me most often when I see the numerous photos on Tototravel.it’s blog and social media that portray me alongside these living testimonies of the wonder of nature is: “is it dangerous?”. The second most frequent question, especially in recent times, is whether it is ethical to do so. The answers are slightly more complex than it might seems but it is essential to go to the bottom of the topic through direct evidence and testimony if we want this activity to be carried out in the right way and lead to indisputable advantages for all beings, humans and animals. Those who follow Tototravel know how much we strive for sustainability, environment, nature, and, in particular, fauna. But he also knows that we often move off the beaten track, “off-grid”, and to do this we need to leave apart shake off commonplaces and rhetoric and start traveling in a deeper and more genuine way. So get ready to open your mind as any real traveler should do, be ready to change your point of view, to get out of the flock, and have your close encounter with African elephants!

Luoghi tristi e terribili dove il principio è “money first” e non certo “animal first“.

Vi posso garantire esistono alcune riserve dove gli animali vengono trattati molto meglio di come noi trattiamo i nostri animali domestici, costringendoli quantomeno a tenere i nostri ritmi, i nostri orari personali e comunque a vivere dove e come decidiamo noi.

Is it possible to have a close encounter with the Elephants in an ethical and professional way?

First of all: there are places where these meetings are done for mere profit. Sad and terrible places where the principle is “money first” and certainly not “animal first”. The animals are drugged or chained and forced to take pictures with tourists. We have already talked about situations of this type in numerous conferences and in the article “Tourism and fauna”.

But to say that all the centers where this enormous privilege of approaching an adult African Elephant is granted are to blame is like saying that since Serial Killers exist, we human beings are all murderers. It is a stupid form of prejudice like racism, it is “making a bundle of all the grass”.

This is why we travel to the right places to help everyone make these amazing experiences in a healthy and constructive way. For information, do not hesitate to contact us.

I can guarantee you there are some parks where animals are treated much better than how we treat our pets, forcing them at least to keep our rhythms, our personal schedules and in any case to live where and how we decide.

First and foremost, here you walk WITH the Elephants and NOT ON the elephants. Then, these majestic giants do not wear any kind of leash, harness, chain: anything at all!

Further certain proof of how much these animals are fond of their owners (although the word “human parents” or “friends” would be more appropriate) is seen simply by how they walk alongside instead of fleeing to hide in the vast reserve where they live, although they have the faculty.

Here we would then have to open a separate chapter on how many animals are really free since anthropization has now turned upside down all of Africa and the animals that were previously free to migrate and occupy vast territories are collected in parks and reserves which -even though they may seem huge to us- represent only a very small percentage of the continent, still being “large cages” that limit the freedom of many species used to travel hundreds of kilometers in the past.

Many migrations have been forever compromised and the perfect cycle that Nature had created over millions of years is hopelessly and definitely compromised forever.

At this point, some of you will be thinking if it is right that these animals, which have always been recognized as wild, are essentially “domesticated”, although I think it is more appropriate to say “accustomed to spending time with humans”. The ideal would be to ask them but this is not yet possible. Pending an invention that allows us to communicate directly with animals (given that we already indirectly do so by interpreting their language and transmitting ours) I allow myself to suppose their response. I am convinced above all that any animal that for any reason lives in captivity prefers to interact with human beings, be pampered (and this for those who have seen it with their eyes like me is quite evident) and be treated as a member of the “extended family “rather than living as a prisoner who is only given food and water.

Not only. Their role as ambassadors allows the awareness of local and non-local populations, constituting a cultural struggle against poaching. In addition, the emotions that they bring to anyone who goes there have an enormous heritage and create a very strong cultural and economic influence towards safeguarding.

Walk with one of these good giants and you’ll never dream of buying an ivory object again, knowing where it comes from, for example.

Close encounter with elephants: is it safe to walk next to these mighty animals?

For me, the answer is much simple and it is: absolutely yes, assuming that the activity takes place in reserves that do it in an ethical and professional manner like those chosen by me among the many visited. It is difficult to say if these pachyderms believe they are human too or if they think that the people around them are just a bit strange members of the pack, but it is sure that they do not see man as a potential threat.

However their language is a little “raw” and the way to say “you bother me, move” can be a push that for a human being means to run to the emergency room. It can more easily happen that they can show curiosity or desire to play and do it with potentially dangerous movements for humans. But there is nothing to worry about: the rangers have many years of experience and are trained to ensure that during the activities no circumstances can be created that is even remotely dangerous for customers or animals.

An experience to be recommended to anyone, within everyone’s reach, and destined to become the protagonist of your most beautiful memories and dreams and to terribly aggravating that sweet-bitter ancestral pathological nostalgia known as “Nostalgia of Africa”.

Is it right to keep these animals to allow tourists a close encounter with elephants?

If done in an ethical and professional way, well, I think it is understood, for me absolutely yes! But the policy of the center must be “animal first” and it is necessary to apply all existing regulations (and perhaps improve them …) aimed at the protection of animals residing in the reserves that do so.

Especially for those who have no experience, it is not easy, sometimes not even visiting them, to understand if the managers really love animals and if the activity, in the end, also benefits from safeguarding them. But it is precisely for this reason that in our recent travels we have decided to visit several of them and take a look also “behind the scenes” before allowing us to advise you.

I am sure that if you know us a little you will trust us. But if you still have doubts, do not hesitate to contact us.

The concept is very complex and it is impossible to dissect it and deal with all the many facets of it in a blog article. But I am extra-convinced of what I have been saying forcefully and for some time, and therefore I will be happier to deepen it with anyone. But avoid sending me messages with unnecessary controversy by pointing your finger on an activity in which animals are loved and respected and although they procure an income (aimed more often than not even for their conservation) they live calm and happy as well as (I hope … !) your pets.

Unfortunately, the conditions that human beings have brought to the animal world are overwhelming and there is no going back. Imagine only the road networks we have created and all the murders committed by those who run over a poor animal, perhaps while going to do something that is not important at all. The interactions are endless and it is impossible to deal with the topic here. But I wanted to give an example to underline how much the considerations to be made on the interactions between man and animal have a much wider spectrum and that in many daily circumstances the animals are damaged, often for no reason or literally tortured only to obtain tastier or cheaper dishes.

In the reservations where the meetings are done ethically and professionally, where the animals are loved and the managers fight to safeguard the species and fight poaching, the exact opposite occurs, but often these are seen the finger pointed at by pseudo-environmentalists.
